Every artist has one subject that is readily available when others are not. Self portraits are a part of the art landscape. From the very early great masters to the modern and contemporary painters of recent years, most if not all, have painted their own image on canvas.
I think, if not only to place a historical marker, a self portrait can be used to see the artist (quite literally) as he sees himself.
